Covering more ground for effective flood protection

The Vario-Bucket, when used together with the RotoTop, helps local authorities with the construction and maintenance of drainage ditches, which is important to prevent floods.
Especially when used in combination with the RotoTop, the VarioLöffel® is the most flexible and versatile bucket thanks to its two different openings. Compared to a conventional trenching bucket, its V-shaped opening enables a tenfold increase in performance during towed operation. The rectangular opening also makes it easier to strip verges and embankments and to construct paths efficiently, while saving time and manual labour.
Even more important, the Vario-Bucket is of particular importance for flood protection. Local authorities, as well as forestry operations, landscaping companies and contractors, must provide the roads and paths for which they are responsible with appropriate ditches designed to absorb as much water as possible during increasingly frequent heavy rainfall events. Perfectly shaped ditches slow down the flow of water towards streams and rivers, thereby reducing the risk of flooding.
An effective method for trench maintenance
Thanks to the V-shaped profile of the Vario-Bucket, it is very easy not only to create the ideal trench shape but also to dig trenches of varying depths and widths, depending on the space available for the trench – for example, a narrower trench alongside a cycle path or a wider one alongside a country road. Depot managers who use this method report that it is then only necessary to re-cut and thoroughly clean out these ditches every four to five years to ensure they can accommodate sufficient water during heavy rainfall. However, for better protection of flora and fauna, this kind of work should ideally be carried out between November and the end of February.
The V-shape of the bucket helps to maintain the volume of the ditches through a thorough cleaning, making them easier to re-cut. Similarly, with an attachment mulcher, the mulching arm can be held at the optimum angle in the ditch, and roadside vegetation is simply removed in two clean passes – one on the roadside and one on the embankment side. In the past, use in local authorities and forestry operations has shown that work can be completed at least 30% to 50% faster with the help of an excavator fitted with a RotoTop and Vario-Bucket rather than with a traditional ditch-clearing bucket. This means that more metres of trenches can be cleared quicker for flood protection.
